Once in a while we get this urge to disconnect from the bustle and hustle of modern day life, completely logoff from the grid, and go out and enjoy the great outdoors with its fresh air and rejuvenating scenery away from the concrete jungle. We attempt to do a supplies list, but often we get to camp and find there is something that we should have brought along but didn’t, or if we did, maybe we should have made a better choice in the type to bring.

This list is not specific to any camping itinerary but offers general guidelines as different trips will require different supplies, but it should serve as a good reference point for customizing your trip,

If you are under medication, this should be the first thing you should pack. Always pack more than you need so that in case of any unforeseen eventualities that may extend your trip, you will still have enough supplies with you. For example if you plan to be away for six days, pack medication for 10 days.

If the medication you are taking is for a life threatening condition, put the medication in two different packs to ensure that should you lose one pack, or it gets destroyed e.g. by water logging or breakage, you will have a backup pack that has been safely stored separately.

A first Aid kit is one of the most essentials items frequently overlooked when planning for trips. Sometimes we come to realize the importance of packing our when we are already in trouble and in far removed from the comfort of modern amenities.

Get specific are information such as local laws, traditions, crime related information, emergency contact no’s, state of the roads, and of course about the rates if there is Park fees or other charges to be paid.

Outdoor and Survival tools

This list will be dictated by the type of campsite you will be headed to, it could be just off the road, deep into the woods or high up in the mountains. Different itineraries will have different requirements.

But some important supplies to consider should be:

  • Spades – You never know when you may have to dig yourself out of a situation
  • Binoculars – Be on the lookout
  • Thermal Clothing – In some places the weather can be unforgiving and in case you get lost this could also save your life.
  • Satellite phone
  • Rope
  • Axe
  • Emergency flares
  • Fire extinguisher

Additional Important Items

Camera– Capture those memories. One day you will be looking back at those images and getting relishing every moment.

Quad Bikes, Dirt bikes, Bicycles – Anything you can manage that will enhance your outdoor experience. Some campsites will also have some of these for renting out to campers, but it is a good idea to check the renting charges beforehand so that you are not in for surprises with exorbitant charges.

Pet supplies – If you are going to bring your pets along with you please bring along adequate supplies of pet food, their toys and other items that will make your camp pet friendly.

In conclusion

It is also not a bad idea to tell some close friends or other acquaintance where you are headed to and how long you expect to be away. People have been known to take off on expeditions without informing anyone, and when the need for search and rescue arose, nobody had a clue where to start. This is especially important if you will be venturing off the “Beaten Path”.

This list is in no way conclusive but it should an adequate baseline preparation check list.
